It’s a far cry from the cosy world of James Herriot with
whom Thirsk has been associated for decades, for this is no tale of vets trying
to alleviate animal suffering, but of sadistic practices in a North Yorkshire halal abattoir. Not only are animals slaughtered legally on the premises of Bowood
Lamb, employing halal methods which inflict unnecessary and avoidable suffering,
but a number of Muslim slaughtermen working at the facility have routinely
added an additional layer of gratuitous cruelty to the process. This was uncovered by an investigation undertaken by Animal Aid carried out over three days last December which revealed:
Sheep kicked
in the face; smashed into solid objects headfirst; picked up and hurled by
legs, fleeces, throats and ears.

There can be
no justification for such maltreatment of animals, just as there can be no
rational justification for either halal or kosher slaughter without
pre-stunning.
It probably
came as a surprise to you, as it did to me, that the North Yorkshire town of
Thirsk was home to a halal abattoir. That such a business can be operating in
an English market town goes some way to explaining how it is that such a large percentage
of lamb in this country – some 37% last year – is slaughtered in accordance
with halal practices, given that it far exceeds the percentage of the
population of this country that is Muslim. It raises the question as to how
many of us are unknowingly and unwittingly eating halal-slaughtered meat, when
if we knew that this were the case, would be sure not to purchase the said
product.
If you wish
to see an end to the practice of religious slaughter without pre-stunning, then
I would urge you to sign the ‘End non-stun slaughter to promote animal welfare’petition that as of this evening had garnered over 107,000 signatures.
Furthermore, an additional petition has been created entitled ‘Make CCTV mandatory for all slaughterhouses’, calling upon Parliament to legislate with a
view to stopping abuses such as those filmed by Animal Aid at Bowood Lamb in
Thirsk. When I viewed it this evening, it had gained over 88,000 signatures. If
it receives over 100,000, it will have to be debated in Parliament.
This morning, John Humphrys announced on Radio 4’s Today
Programme that the number of sheep and goats killed using either halal or
kosher methods without pre-stunning, reached the staggering figure of 2.4
million in the past year. This represented a 60% jump in the number killed in
this manner compared to the previous year. Why has there been such a surge?
Muslim agitation. Not ‘extremist’ Islamist agitation, but mainstream Muslim agitation.
The Daily Mail revealed that this number, according to the
British Veterinary Association, represented 37% of sheep and goats killed using
halal methods. Furthermore, nationally the percentage of cattle and poultry
killed in this manner has now reached 25% and 16% of their respective totals.
Let this be crystal clear: a special exemption to animal
welfare legislation is granted to halal and kosher slaughterhouses to enable
them to kill animals using less humane methods than are available. This is
totally unacceptable. How can an alleged 5% of the population that is Muslim,
have such a massive impact upon the slaughter practices of our national food
industry? How can this minority roll back the tide of progress, and the
majority capitulate in such a spineless manner? Are some afraid that if the
right to halal slaughter is not granted, that it will be their throats that
will be cut, instead of those of the terrified, fully conscious animals that are
currently despatched in this manner? How backward, how irrational, how
resolutely anti-British, anti-English, anti-European and anti-modern it is, to
subscribe to the belief that a muttered Arabic incantation somehow renders this
mode of slaughter ‘humane’.
If you must eat in an ‘Indian’ restaurant, do not order meat.
If you eat at Pizza Express, and profess to care about animal welfare, be aware
that all of its chicken is halal. Last year, circa one fifth of Nando’s restaurants were halal, as were 100 KFC outlets. Fancy something from Subway? Unless
it’s a pork product, think again, as it could well be halal. If slaughter
without pre-stunning is not stopped – completely – those who hold backward
beliefs will have triumphed over the values of a more advanced, more humane and
enlightened society. Is this progress? No. This is regression. Regression in
the name of ‘diversity’, facilitated by the national body politic’s auto-immune
disease known as multiculturalism.
Boycott businesses that sell meat that has been slaughtered
without pre-stunning. Sign petitions calling for the end of religious
exemptions to animal welfare legislation. Write to your MP, and make your
feelings on this issue known. Halal is the thin end of the wedge, as are
Shariah-compliant financial products and sundry other areas of law. England, in
particular, is being colonised by Muslim settlers and their descendants, and as
such is dying; its progressive values slowly bleeding to death beneath the
halal butcher’s knife.
The statement below has been taken from the website of a body calling itself the Association of Non Stun Abattoirs (ANSA):
ANSA (Association of Non Stun Abattoirs) was formed to represent the voice of the halal meat industry. The association aims to create and raise awareness of the halal industry according to the teachings of the Quran and the prophetic tradition.
The ANSA logo will give the consumers assurance that the meat they will be consuming is truly halal and is ritually halal slaughtered according to Islamic principles.
From ANSA’s mission statement, one could be excused for thinking that it is an organisation based in Pakistan, but sadly, this is not the case, for it is based here in the UK.
Many of us eat meat, and many do not, but even for those of us who do, it would seem perverse if anyone were to suggest that we should do anything other than minimise the suffering and distress of animals in the slaughter process; it is incumbent upon us to ensure that the most humane slaughter methods available are employed. Animal welfare standards in the UK are generally of a high standard, considerably higher than in many EU countries, which can at times place our farmers at a competitive disadvantage; however, this piece is not going to argue for a reduction in these standards, but rather to defend them, and to outline the case for ensuring that there are no exemptions from their application.
There may, given the specific historical, geographical and climatic contexts in which halal and kosher slaughter arose, have been some original rational basis to the dietary taboos of the religious ideologies that demand such practices, but that basis has long since gone: there is no rational reason why either Muslims or Jews should object to the stunning of livestock before slaughter. Only individuals of a literalistic scriptural bent within either of these religious traditions, or out-and-out sadists, could surely maintain that superfluous pain and distress should be inflicted upon an animal, simply to satisfy the arbitrary demands of ‘authoritative’ texts irrelevant to contemporary realities.
A basic principle of law in a modern state is that it should be applicable equally to all of its citizens, with no individuals or groups being accorded special rights or exemptions. The principle of “one law for all” is a sound one, and when it comes to questions of animal welfare, it should not be the case that livestock consumed by literalist doctrinaire Muslims or Jews should be afforded lesser protection than those consumed by everyone else. To the animals, it matters not what set of beliefs the slaughterman holds, but that their deaths be as swift and as devoid of suffering as possible. It is not the feelings of the religious that should be taken into account, but those of the animals destined for the table, for in their deaths, the latter suffer rather more distress than the inflexible dogmatists would suffer in being denied the right to practice their rites.
A chance to change the law with respect to religious slaughter comes our way in the near future, for the National Secular Society (NSS) notes that the current EU Welfare at Slaughter Directive 93/110 is due to be replaced in January next year. Although the new Regulation 1099/2009 will allow for exemptions for religious slaughter to continue, it also offers the opportunity to end them. The NSS is thus urging people who oppose this practice to write to their MPs in an effort to have their opinions taken into account in the Westminster consultation exercise that will take place in the coming months. NSS blog contributor Stephen Evans has written an interesting piece about this, linking it to ANSA’s recent campaign involving incorrectly labelled ‘halal’ meat in Birmingham. ANSA of course, was not outraged by the fact that halal meat is routinely sold unlabelled to unsuspecting non-Muslims, but by instances in which pre-stunned meat was labelled as ‘halal’. ANSA, clearly, is a deeply reactionary Islamist outfit as can be seen from its website, that is intent upon campaigning for increased cruelty in animal slaughter.
What hope do we have of the law being changed so as to be both consonant with animal welfare and the principle of “one law for all”? Judging by recent experience, the prospects do not look overly hopeful. Earlier this year for example, Shipley MP Philip Davies sought to introduce a ‘Food Labelling (Halal and Kosher Meat) Bill’, but it was blocked by 73 votes to 70. The bill in itself was highly moderate, for it did not propose a ban upon either halal or kosher slaughter, but merely that meat produced using these methods should be clearly labelled as such, so that those of us who object to these slaughter techniques could avoid it. Nonetheless, the majority of MPs could not even be bothered to vote either way with respect to this perfectly reasonable suggestion, and the bill was defeated. MP Gerald Kaufman should be ashamed of his key role in sabotaging Davies’s bill, for it would have in no way infringed upon his ability to purchase kosher meat. Kaufman was quoted in Mancunian Matters as stating:
This has profound connotations of religious feelings and I would be letting my own faith down, my family, I would be letting my many, many good decent, fine religious Muslims in my constituency down if I did not state my total opposition to this Bill.
Despite the inarticulacy of Kaufman’s intervention, and the absence of any underpinning logic for his position, other than brazen politicking for the Muslim vote and his personal adherence to the dead letter of scriptural dogma, it was his position that won the day. This, and a number of other instances, demonstrates an uncomfortable reality: MPs and parliamentary candidates are, as a rule, highly responsive to Muslim demands because Muslims, generally speaking but with some exceptions of course, act as a highly volatile bloc vote, that can swing results in certain constituencies. If therefore, you should reside in a constituency where there are a significant number of Muslims, it is unlikely that your MP will be receptive to your plea to ban religious slaughter. For all of the protestations of the multiculturalists and advocates of mass immigration, this is the end result of their policy: not ‘enrichment’, but the growing power of dogmatic and vocal minorities to impose their backward beliefs on a more advanced society and culture; reversing our advances in animal welfare, and generating a climate of fear amongst potential critics of this regression, who wish at all costs to avoid being labelled ‘racist’.
Honouring religious Slaughter: Gibson’s Aztec take on Mayan History
Nicolas Sarkozy has talked tough on the question of immigration and on dealing with rioters (coincidentally mainly of Maghrebian origin) on a number of occasions, whilst serving either as French Prime Minister or President, whilst repeatedly not matching his words with action. As the presidential race is now effectively underway, the BBC reports that he is now stating that there are too many foreigners in France, and that the country’s system for integrating them is increasingly failing. Thus, offering the French people a message somewhat familiar to British voters from the ‘promise’ of David Cameron to reduce our mass immigration to the “tens of thousands” per annum, Sarkozy has stated that he wishes to reduce immigration from circa 180,000 to 100,000 a year.
Clearly, Sarkozy is making a cynical ploy to undercut support for rival candidate Marine Le Pen of the Front National, who is enjoying a degree of popularity with French electors, but is unlikely to win the presidential race. The issue of mass immigration is becoming increasingly acute for the French because of the serious Islamisation that it is now being inflicted upon French society, for last month it was revealed that all Parisian abattoirs used only halal slaughter. This fact has rightly shocked the native French.
Sarkozy however, is no friend of the French. His ethnic roots of course are not French, so it should come as no surprise that he is a keen advocate of an attenuated and insipid civic version of French national identity. Indeed, if you have not seen it, the video below should give an insight into the true thoughts of Nicolas Sarkozy. Here he can be seen calling for obligatory “métissage”, that is, the interbreeding of the French with non-Europeans, whilst at the same time calling for obeisance to be displayed towards the Saudis and other Arabs. Clearly, Sarkozy is not fit to lead the French people, whom in reality he wishes to see wiped from the pages of history. Hopefully, French electors will realise this, and will not cast their ballots for him in the forthcoming presidential election.
Congratulations are in order to the 15-20 men of the EDL who turned up to demonstrate against halal meat at an Asda supermarket in Rochdale on Saturday 14 January. Sadly, it is reported that the police were called and that the protesters were then ejected. This perhaps had something to do with the location that the men had chosen for the protest: inside the Dane Street store next to the halal meat section itself. We shouldn’t be surprised therefore that they were moved on.
Although it is certainly a good idea to draw shoppers' attention to businesses that sell halal meat and to the animal cruelty involved in halal slaughter, it would be best not to choose to protest inside a store, but rather outside with say some double-sided A5 or A4 flyers outlining the outrageous exemptions to animal welfare standards made on behalf of religious slaughter without pre-stunning.
Perhaps the oddest aspect of this protest was the perplexed response that it elicited. According to the Rochdale News:
“A spokesperson for Asda said: ""We were surprised at the protest because we cater for everyone, from the new Butcher's Selection display in aisle 31 to the halal concession on the back wall - both have been successful since their launches last year."”
How strange! This individual seems to be either completely oblivious to what halal meat is, or is utterly indifferent to the fact that it entails additional suffering to that undergone by a sentient creature in the slaughter process. Quite clearly, Asda management need to be informed about the nature of this Islamic practice. And to think that such people have the gall to call members of the EDL “ignorant knuckledraggers”! The bigotry and complacency of such multiculturally-inclined businesspeople is startling.
The British Humanist Association has been running a campaign against religious slaughter for quite some time, and it is worth visiting their webpage dealing with this topic, for it contains many good tips on what to do to help bring about a change in legislation to bring these practices to an end. Interestingly, it hosts a number of replies to its letter sent in 2010 asking retailers if they only sell meat from animals which were pre-stunned in the slaughter process. Asda was not amongst the respondents.
The EDL should aim to shame those businesses that sell meat produced through methods of religious slaughter that cause undue additional suffering, and thereby damage their business if they do not change their practices. As a shopper, you can make an informed choice: spend your money elsewhere. Personally, I buy all of my meat from a good local English butcher where I can be sure of its provenance (I also only eat free range, which means that I generally miss out on poultry). If you must buy your meat from a supermarket, consider Morrisons who replied to the BHA as follows:
“At Morrisons we only sell 100% British fresh beef, lamb and poultry. None of it is Halal. The vast majority of our fresh beef and lamb is processed at our own abattoirs in Britain. We adhere to high standards of animal welfare. All of the cattle, lamb and poultry are stunned prior to slaughter.
Our own label frozen beef and poultry is all UK slaughtered and is not Halal.
Our own label frozen lamb is currently sourced from New Zealand and is Halal, the animal is humanely stunned before slaughter and a prayer is read.
The limited range of Halal and kosher branded frozen food products that we sell are all clearly labelled as such.”
It’s a pity that our Kiwi cousins have seemingly been driven by economics to embrace halal slaughter, but that is a matter for them to deal with. Be safe and buy British.
Once again, congratulations to those EDL activists in Rochdale who carried out the first action in what I hope will be an ongoing campaign of drawing public attention to the violation of animal welfare standards in this country in the name of multicultural ‘tolerance’. I am sure that our Gallic cousins in Bloc Identitaire will also look upon this with approval.
UPDATE: A contributor to the Casuals United blog named Roxanne has spoken to participants in Saturday's protest and posted a piece in which she states that it was not an official EDL protest, and was instead attended by a combination of EDL supporters and locals concerned at Asda's infringement of animal welfare through its sale of halal meat. She also claims that there were about 30 protesters rather than the 15 reported in the Rochdale News, and notes with appropriate satisfaction that the protest was entirely peaceful.
The traditional English Butcher's: a Halal-free Zone
Well, as readers will know, I am firmly opposed to halal slaughter as it inflicts additional and unnecessary cruelty in the despatch of animals for the table and desensitises the butcher to suffering. The BBC reports that a butcher named Naeem Butt has today been sentenced by Preston Crown Court for the brutal murder of Saheel Ahmed who was having an affair with Butt’s wife. Butt employed a foot-long knife to sever Ahmed’s jugular in a ritual fashion and to stab him repeatedly. This revolting crime has surely left Mr Ahmed’s family in a state of distraught bereavement, and one can only speculate as to the terrible state of mind of Shakra Ali, Ahmed’s lover, whom Butt had previously assaulted.
To what extent had Butt become desensitised to the process of killing by his practice of halal butchery? The process of slaughter can never be pleasant, but the additional cruelty employed in slitting a conscious creature’s throat and watching it bleed to death cannot in my opinion have anything other than a disturbing effect upon the mind of the person who repeatedly carries out such a process. Desensitisation to suffering seems a likely side effect.
Sadly, Asian Image reports the police as stating that Butt’s crime combined ‘rage, jealousy, revenge’ and ‘an element of honour’. The use of this term ‘honour’ to justify brutality, particularly towards women, is a nauseating piece of cultural baggage that has no place in any civilised society. There is nothing ‘honourable’ about brutally murdering a man or beating your wife and generally treating women like chattels to be terrorised at will. Butt’s actions betray his fragile sense of masculine ego, but alas, the mental outlook that underpinned his behaviour is consonant with a patriarchal religious culture whose misogyny was systematised and legitimised by its founder: Mohammed.
One can only express condolences for the family of Saheel Ahmed and for Shakra Ali, and be thankful that Butt has been found guilty. Let us hope that he receives a suitably condign punishment.
This evening I take a brief look at the manner in which the Subway chain sanitises its sale of halal meat to its customers by using language that skirts around precisely what halal means. Let's take them out one by one and make Britain a halal-free zone!
Successful retailers are canny about customer preferences and purchasing power, and no specialist trade publication in the retail sector would last for long if it published information which did not assist its readership in increasing turnover and profits. The information contained in a lengthy feature entitled ‘Halal here we come’ which was published last month by the Online Meat Trades Journal is therefore of interest to more than the meat sector, insofar as its analysis of the Muslim market in the UK reveals some surprising statistics.
As the Mail on Sunday revealed last Sunday, millions of non-Muslim Britons are being sold halal-slaughtered meat and poultry without this fact being advertised, and Muslim consumer habits reveal why this is the case. According to the Online Meat Trades Journal the halal meat market in the UK is worth up to £2 billion per annum, but it laments that ‘most [of this] meat is imported and sold via ethnic retailers.’ It therefore sees considerable scope for the domestic industry to up its share of the halal sector and thereby increase its turnover and profits as outlined in the following revealing paragraph:
Note the reference to “up to four million Muslims” in the UK. The 2001 census suggested that there were 1.6 million Muslims in the UK, whilst in January 2009 the Times published figures which illustrated that the resident Muslim population was growing ten times faster than any other sector of society, and had by the end of 2008 risen to circa 2.4 million. Clearly, we are witnessing a terrifyingly fast growth of this population, and the more of them that are here the stronger will be their lobbying for the free ingress of their co-religionists from overseas.
The article is also candid about the spectacularly rapid growth of the Muslim population across Europe. Demographic Islamisation is happening and it is translating directly into enforced cultural and political Islamisation as well as modified business practices. Given the figures relating to the percentages of poultry and lamb purchased by Muslims in the UK, why would large producers and abattoirs opt to have a non-halal supply chain when maintaining separate feeds adds to costs and halal slaughter remains (for some illogical reason) legal, particularly when it is the halal sector that is growing the fastest? This not only has to be stopped, but to be reversed: halal slaughter in the UK must be banned, as must be the importation of all animal products derived from this practice.
The non-Muslim apologists for halal slaughter often avoid confronting the matter by claiming that slaughtering animals is painful anyway. However, this assertion is a non-starter, for as a degree of suffering is unavoidable in animal slaughter, why make this suffering worse by slitting the creature’s throat and bleeding it to death rather than stunning? This leads on to the second of the rationalisations used by the apologists: in the UK halal slaughter involves pre-stunning. Although this proviso does exist, many Muslims do not accept that pre-stunned animals truly are halal and thus insist that stunning is not employed. Bizarrely, our law allows for halal slaughter without pre-stunning. The confusion surrounding this issue is illustrated by the comments of Rizvan Khalid (an executive director of a halal processor) on the Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) guidelines on halal slaughter in his interview with the Online Meat Trades Journal:
This illustrates why you should not purchase any meat or poultry labelled as halal. Sadly, some of our major supermarkets are greedily adapting their practices to the growing halal market and thus both Tesco and Asda have been making special efforts to introduce halal ranges.
The fact is that the option of choosing whether or not you eat halal meat is quickly disappearing as Islam’s demographic ascendancy forces its doctrinaire demands upon the rest of us whilst our politicians refuse to recognise let alone tackle the issue. If when you are eating out and no guarantee can be given that your meal does not contain halal-slaughtered produce I would recommend that you either opt for whichever pork-based option is available, stick to game or the vegetarian option. When buying fresh meat, purchase from a reputable local butcher and not a supermarket.
The Mail on Sunday has revealed the shocking extent to which catering in the UK has become Islamised. It transpires that not only do Muslims get the halal meat and poultry that they desire, but that it is also being sold to unsuspecting non-Muslim consumers who would rightly object to the manner in which these animals were slaughtered. Strangely, one of the biggest culprits in selling halal meat to unsuspecting customers is the brewer Whitbread! Apparently, more than three-quarters of its poultry sold via its Beefeater and Brewers Fayre outlets turns out to be halal. The Mail quotes a Whitbread spokesman as saying:
Well, that’s yet another company that joins my list to boycott along with KFC and Asda because of their halal compliant policies. Will you join me? It is scandalous that our advanced norms of animal welfare are being undermined by the practise of barbarous dark-age religious codes for which the Government (whichever mainstream party it is drawn from) makes special exemption for them. It is galling and utterly irrational that special exemption to animal welfare standards should be granted to religious slaughter that incurs needless additional suffering to animals. Halal slaughter should be banned in the UK, as should the importation of halal meat and poultry. If Muslims see the consumption of halal produce as integral to their way of life they can quite easily up sticks and make their home in another country where these backward practices are an accepted societal norm.

We need to ban halal slaughter in the UK, but until this ban becomes a reality, I urge you to write to all organisations that force halal food upon their customers and clients demanding that they stop doing so. Wherever possible, boycott any business that sells halal food and find an alternative supplier. Islamisation has gone too far and it must be rolled back. Say no to the Islamisation of Britain. Say no to the Islamisation of Europe. Say no to halal produce. Say goodbye to unnecessary cruelty.

Following Asda's decision to sell only halal products in its Isle of Dogs store late last year, the Islamization Watch blog reports that Colne KFC is now selling halal products only. This means that anyone who purchases chicken from this branch will now be eating inhumanely slaughtered poultry owing to the refusal of local Muslims to eat meat which has been produced using methods that seek to minimise suffering to animals as they are despatched. The branch has also stopped selling pork products.

The store, on North Valley Retail Park, is one of 74 KFC outlets nationwide to be chosen for a halal trial. Those in Burnley, Accrington and Blackburn are also taking part in the trial.
On its website, KFC states: "For some time, we have received requests to provide halal food in parts of the UK, and as a result of this we are running a halal trial within communities where we anticipate a strong demand for halal products."
A Facebook group opposing this policy has been set up, so if you are a member, I urge you to join it. Currently, there are more of us non-Muslim than Muslim consumers in the UK, so together we can drive businesses to ruin should they choose to introduce halal-slaughtered meat into their product range. We must not tolerate the creeping Islamisation of our nation. Boycott KFC. Boycott Asda. Boycott any business that introduces halal meat. Do not condone the barbarous intentionally cruel practices of a dark age religion by continuing to purchase products from KFC or Asda.
Halal slaughter causes needless pain and suffering to animals, and that it is permitted to take place in the UK today is a scandal. I am unhappy to see that the management of ASDA’s Isle of Dogs store has decided that henceforth only halal meat will be available from its fresh meat counter.
The Sunday Express reports that
“Asda insisted it was “responding to customer demand” and had done a deal with a local halal butcher to reflect the ethnic make up of the area’s population. Yet figures show that while the borough of Tower Hamlets is almost half Muslim, the Isle of Dogs is about 80 per cent non-Bangladeshi. Workers at the store said furious non-Muslim customers would not [buy] meat derived from cutting the throats of animals and letting them bleed to death.”
This is but the most recent example of the creeping Islamisation of the United Kingdom, one that in this instance is passed off as “responding to customer demand”. Consider this: if we have now reached a stage where the presence of a concentrated body of so-called mainstream Muslims can result in the imposition of shariah-compliant practices, it is only a matter of time before their demographic weight translates into the imposition of other aspects of shariah which will also be forced onto non-Muslims. Islam is incompatible with all other social systems and we must do all that we can to resist and turn back the encroachment of Islamic practices in our country.
ASDA’s bottom line is its bottom line. If the company wishes to respond to customer demand, then let us show it what we want by shopping elsewhere and demanding that it drops its halal policy. I pledge to boycott ASDA. Write to ASDA to express your dissatisfaction with its decision to promote inhumane treatment of animals and state that you’ll not shop at any of its stores until it is reversed.
